ZMA Live! A BOOK APART | Child of the Fire: Mary Edmonia Lewis and the Problem of Art History's Black and Indian Subject

Join us in reading Child of the Fire: Mary Edmonia Lewis and the Problem of Art History's Black and Indian Subject by Kirsten Pai Buick. The daughter of an African American father and Chippewa mother, Lewis went on to become the first woman of African American and Native American heritage to achieve international recognition and fame as a sculptor. Her work is known for incorporating themes relating to her heritage into masterful Neoclassical-style sculpture.

ZMA docent Janey Debray will lead an exciting discussion on this amazing nineteenth-century artist who overcame many odds and shattered expectations of what women and minority artists could accomplish.

A limited number of copies will be available at the John McIntire library in downtown Zanesville starting May 7, 2021.
