This small exhibition features a selection of nearly one hundred items including newspaper clippings, photographs, ceremonial objects from the Lodge of Amity, No. 5, commemorative ceramics, and other artifacts that were sealed away January 24, 1902, in the Zanesville Masonic Temple Time Capsule.

The capsule, placed in the cornerstone of the Masonic Temple building foundation located at 36 N. Fourth St. in downtown Zanesville, Ohio nearly 120 years ago, remained undisturbed until the night of January 6, 2022, when the iconic building was destroyed by fire.

Remarkably, the objects now on view were not damaged by the blaze nor by the ravages of time because they were preserved within the lead time capsule box. Dating from 1902, the items capture a unique moment in time. A time marked by prosperity and progress in Zanesville, Ohio.

The items in this exhibition are on loan from the Lodge of Amity, No. 5  of Free and Accepted Masons. This lodge was one of the six founding lodges of the Grand Lodge of Ohio, chartered on June 24, 1805. While the Lodge of Amity No. 5 sold the Renaissance-Revival Masonic Temple building several years ago, they continued to lease their lodge rooms from the new owners.
